Thursday Dec 20, 2018

Aims to Provide more Affordable Performing Arts Space

Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is pleased to announce a new pricing structure for its performing arts venues. This new pricing structure comes on the heels of the recent Boston Performing Arts Facilities Assessment prepared by Technical Development Corporation (TDC), in partnership with the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA), which sheds light on the difficulty artists have finding affordable and available performance space in Boston. The new theatre prices reflect BCA's core mission to support working artists to create, perform and exhibit new work.

"When I started at BCA, my first order of business was to figure out a way BCA could create more affordable performance and rehearsal rates for artists," said Lyndsay Allyn Cox, BCA's Director of Theatre Arts. "Not only was that something BCA wanted me to do, but it was something the community that brought me up as an artist expected me to do."

Cox was part of the original study that led to the Boston Performing Arts Facilities Assessment. As the former Managing Director for Fresh Ink Theatre Company, she understands first-hand the impact limited affordable spaces can have on small, medium and, in some cases, large performing arts organizations.

BCA calculated these new prices by analyzing the cost to run the Plaza Theatres. From this assessment, BCA developed a sliding scale based on the individual companies, or artist's, operating budget. Additionally, BCA is introducing off-peak

As Gregory Ruffer, BCA's President and CEO, explains, "BCA has been working on these new theatre rental prices for over a year to ensure our campus provides accessible and affordable spaces for artists at all budget levels. We hope the new prices will encourage more amazing performing arts work on our campus!"
