The sunny, mild weather contrasted with the macabre theme at this year's Haunted Graveyard Tour at the South End Burying Ground on Washington Street, which took place on Halloween Day, Sunday, October 31 at 2:00 and 3:00 PM. Approximately 50 people gathered inside the customarily locked graveyard to hear South End News contributing writer Michele D. Maniscalco present a history of the early 19th century burying ground whose history parallels the initial development of the South End, along with macabre tales plucked from South End history. Afterward, attendees of all ages, some in costume, eagerly explored the peaceful and scenic final resting place, photographing headstones, tombs, and crypts. While the weather cooperated for the 2:00 PM tour, a rain shower cut short the 3:00 PM presentation.
